Our General Senior High School prepares students comprehensively and in an organized way to succeed in the Higher Education Admission Examinations. To achieve this goal, we take advantage of an enhanced and integrated educational program which aims at cultivating critical ability in conjunction with the development of personal skills.
… at a glance
At the General Senior High School, we focus on the comprehensive and organized preparation for success in the Panhellenic Examinations, by offering a complete and enhanced educational program.
The quality of education is proven by the achievements of our students in high demand and first preference schools and is based on the methods, organizational ability and experience of teachers, who systematically and carefully prepare our students.
Achievements in the Panhellenic Examinations
Our achievements have remained steadily at high levels all these years, with rates exceeding 95%. Our seniors succeed in schools of high demand and of their first preference, thanks to their complete preparation and the support we provide them on a cognitive and socio-emotional level.
We attach great importance to the understanding of the courses, we apply personalized learning models, we exploit modern technology as a tool for the assimilation of complex scientific concepts. Learning is mostly consolidated in the school, while as regards courses not examined at Panhellenic level, an attempt is made that their content is assimilated in a pleasant way and through discussion, so that the students, mainly of the 2nd and 3rd Grade of Senior High School dispose of their time to comprehensively absorb the courses examined at Panhellenic level.
In all the classes of Senior High School, our program is enhanced with additional teaching hours, depending on the orientation and the stream. The material is organized in a system so that our students are fully prepared for the Panhellenic examinations.
The students are already separated from the 1st Grade of Senior High School -depending on their interests – to practical and theoretical stream. In this way, classes become homogeneous, the program is strengthened with tutorials and intensive and comprehensive preparation is ensured.
In our School, those students of the Senior High School who are interested in following the IB program, can join the PRE-IB Introductory Program. PRE-IB students take a series of three IGCSE courses (which constitute certificates of secondary education knowledge), at the same time with the courses of the 1st grade of Senior High school: English, Mathematics and another course of their choice. A student who attends the PRE-IB courses and in the 2nd Grade of Senior High School decides that he/she does not want to follow the IB program, can continue without any problems in the 2nd grade of Senior High School, given that he/she has regularly attended the Greek courses program of the 1st grade of Senior High School.
The “Life Skills” program is implemented at all levels of our School. Especially in High School children are made aware of the Values of the society through organized experiential activities in the following areas:
- Development of Social and Emotional Skills
- Ecological Awareness – Environment
- Volunteering and Social Contribution
- Internet safety
- Human Rights
The methodologies we apply promote 21st Century Skills, critical and inquiring ability, creative thinking, teamwork, technology utilization, communication, collaboration, taking of initiatives, empathy, respect for diversity etc.
The Study Methodology includes mind maps, diagrams, creation of tables, underlining, sideheads etc., in parallel with the study of the courses themselves. Also, the pros and cons of each student’s study are pointed out, as well as the ways to improve it. At the same time, in the 3rd grade of Senior High School, the upcoming stress of the exams and its management are discussed.
Interdisciplinary projects are part of our weekly curriculum and include suitable subjects, while, at the same time, they cultivate and gradually enhance cognitive and social skills. In this way, students learn how to learn through an exploration activity, searching for answers to questions and queries.
Project-Based Learning is a student-centered model, which enables the student to gain academic knowledge and develop necessary skills through active participation in carefully designed research activities, structured around actual problems.
The studies of Foreign Languages (English, French, German) are completed in Senior High School. Senior High School students can prepare for the certification examinations of Cambridge ESOL, the French Institute and the Goethe Institute, the special IELTS certification examinations and the Panhellenic Examinations.
The Senior High School offers the possibility of preparing for certifications not only in the foreign languages (English, French, German) but also to enrich the student’s CV.
The globally recognized British organization Assessment & Qualifications Alliance (AQA) and in particular, the Foundation Project Qualifications program it proposes, provides certification of research projects at 3 Levels. Under the guidance of a teacher, our students develop skills necessary for their future professional and / or academic development, gain experience in new fields and study methods, utilize digital tools and enrich their CV with a certification from an internationally recognized body.
Students can obtain the Student Leadership Accreditation (SLA) for the positive impact of their actions at classroom, school unit as well as broader community level.
The recognized British institution certifies music studies in any musical instrument. This certification can be included in students’ applications to foreign universities.
In the 1st grade of Senior High School our students realize the importance of “personal planning”, gain a deeper awareness of their skills and of the decision-making strategies, as well as a critical attitude towards the complex and contradictory information that they receive. Valid psychometric tests are carried out, individual counselling is provided, test results are presented and information on educational areas and professional choices is given.
Thanks to the development of specialized approaches, our students receive complete information material and guidance, so that their personal goals can be specified. To that purpose, appropriate exercises are implemented, counselling is provided and parents and students are informed in many ways.
The Career Counselling Department seeks to connect the school with the labor market. At the same time, it supports a variety of specific roles that students, as adult citizens, will take on during their lives. In this context, we have in place the institution of Internships, which gives the opportunity to the students who wish so, to work during summer on the subject-matter of their choice.
During Career Day, important and distinguished professionals from many areas are invited, so that students form a more complete image of the prospective professions.
The Mentor supports, guides, builds a relationship of confidence with the students, closely cooperates with them to help them discover and promote their potentials; He/she does not solve problems, but, as a good listener, he/she encourages and motivates the child’s manner of thinking.
The Teacher Counselor operates in each class aiming at guiding, making decisions and taking initiatives by students on collective actions, problem solving in the classroom, the relationship of students between them etc.
The Psychologist participates, among other things, in the Study Methodology program with special sessions in the classrooms regarding the management of the stress of the Panhellenic Examinations and discusses with the children about issues of their age and their special needs, as they arise from their environment, school and not.
Through the Physical Education program, students have the opportunity to perfect their motor skills, participate effectively in physical activities that suit their interests and acquire knowledge and experiences, in order to remain active for life. The aims of the course are achieved through participation in team sports (basketball, volleyball, handball, football) as well as individual ones (track and field, gymnastics, traditional and modern dance) as well as through the acquaintance with non-popular sports. The course takes place in modern sports facilities (indoor stadium, gym, aerobics halls etc.) and is supported by sports and technological material.
Our School is leading in the sporting events of our country both by the school teams and by AC Doukas School. The school teams participate in national and international events, thus providing the student-athletes with positive experiences and achievements that give them additional points for their admission to universities.
The activities of the “Healthy Body” program, coordinated by the Department of Physical Education, focus on issues of wellness, health and proper nutrition while at the same time, shaping a culture of active lifestyle, promoting physical activity, exercise and sports inside and outside school.
We seek to familiarize our students with the literary book, pursuing language proficiency, self-knowledge and understanding of human nature. We promote fine arts, theater, visual arts aiming at all our students taking action and being involved, not just the talented ones. Our educational visits combine the cognitive objects on which we work each time with the area that we visit, implementing cross-thematic actions. In our senior classes trips we choose the place based on its historical character, its museums, its ecological interest.
Teams operate after the completion of our core program. We indicatively mention:
• Doukas Math Club: Mathematics for talented children preparing for the Kangaroo competitions, the Hellenic Mathematical Society and the American Mathematics Competitions.
• Doukas Model United Nations Team: Preparation for participation in the Model United Nations event which is a simulation of United Nations Conferences by practicing public debate, consultation and critical thinking.
